Service & Repairs
What if I told you that your car electronics is one of the most important thing to your safety?
Don’t neglect your vehicle’s electronic systems – trust our experts to repair your vehicle properly the first time around! A poor driving experience can often be related to a malfunctioning computer or driving controls. Come to Pete’s Garage to ensure your vehicle is in top driving condition.
Our electronic services include:
With an ECU remap, the ECU’s standard software is extracted, modified and then reloaded back onto the ECU. With most cars we simply plug into their OBD (on-board diagnostic’s) port, in others we actually need to remove the ECU itself to be able to access the EPROM. On some ECU’s we may even have to unsolder the EPROM, and then install a new one.
Flexibility and compatibility are two keys factors that manufacturers strive for when producing engines, as they need to perform at their best in many different countries around the world. As soon as the vehicle leaves the factory, it must be able to cope with extreme differences in temperature, climatic conditions as well as other environmental factors – not even fuel qualities are the same in every country.
Subsequently, engines and ECU’s straight out of the factory are often detuned and governed in order to be able to cope with this vast array of differing conditions. A second factor is cost. Development costs can be huge and most models don’t warrant over development. Lastly, manufacturers have found ways of improving their bottom line, by simply limiting the engine power via the ECU program and without any major development costs, they are able to produce different models with more power that carry a higher price tag.
It’s these untapped power reserves that ECU remapping is able to tap into when we optimise the vehicle’s operating map. We are able to tune signals such as fuel quality and injection, boost pressure depending on the volume of air which is present, rpm, load and other correction factors which then help us determine the correct injection time etc.
Removing the top speed limiter
If your car has a top speed governor that you would like removed then an ECU remap is the way to go.
Check Engine Light
When the DPF is installed, users are required to maintain the engine and the filter correctly. To be more specific, users have to:
- Conform to the requirements of engine manufacturers.
- Perform precise DPF annual cleanings.
- Use fuel accurately.
- Track fuel use.
The DPF possibly captures all visible diesel emissions; therefore, other than tracking fuel use, there are no visible signs of an engine malfunction.
Operate the engine properly to meet duty cycle demands.
Potential DPF Maintenance Problems
When a DPF is not used according to requirements, complications may appear. For example:
If the operator changes a vehicle’s duty cycle:
It is possible that the engine will not heat correctly.
In these conditions, the exhaust temperature will go below the necessary value.
Accordingly, the possibility of plugging increases, the DPF requires more frequent cleaning, and damage of the DPF and engine are more probable.
DPF problems can also be created by:
Frequent power take-offs (PTO),
Stop-and-go driving, and Idling.
Why does a DPF require periodic cleaning?
Diesel particulate filters remove particulate matter (soot) from the exhaust gas and ash from the motor oil. The DPF’s intense heat burns off dangerous toxins. However, ash residue builds up in the filter’s substrate and can only be removed with correct cleaning.
The EGR valve helps your car more efficiently and completely burn fuel by recirculating a portion of your exhaust and running it through the combustion process again. This results in a cooler, more complete burn of the fuel which decreases you car’s noxious emissions by prohibiting the formation of some harmful gases.
The EGR valve is vital to your car’s emission controls. Exhaust gas recirculation helps to keep huge amounts of unburned fuel from being released into the atmosphere. This unburned fuel is thought to be a huge contributor to greenhouse gas build-up. That’s why an EGR system became mandatory on all new vehicles some time ago.
When the EGR valve goes bad, it must be cleaned or replaced. Unlike some emissions control devices that can go bad without affecting the drivability of the car or truck, a bad EGR valve can really affect the engine’s performance, or even cause it to stop running altogether. The good news is you can clean it.
EGR Valve = Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve.
The EGR valve controls formation of noxious emissions.
Rough idle and poor acceleration can be caused by a faulty EGR valve.
Guide Review – EGR Valve
The EGR valve, or Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, is a vacuum controlled valve which allows a specific amount of your exhaust back into the intake manifold. This exhaust mixes with the intake air and actually cools the combustion process. Cooler is always better inside your engine. The exhaust your EGR valve recirculates also prevents the formation of Nitrogen related gases. These are referred to as NOX emissions, and are a common cause for failing emissions testing. Unfortunately, your EGR valve can get stuck, causing NOX gases to build up. You’ll know if your EGR valve is stuck or malfunctioning because your car will experience symptoms like rough idle and bucking on acceleration. Fuel mileage will also suffer, and you may see a Check Engine light followed by a readable code in your car’s OBD-II or newer computer.
Pete’s Garage has state-of-the-art equipment to provide computer reflashing to our customers in the Banbury area. The primary reason to reflash a computer (which basically means updating or reinstalling its software) is that an update has been issued by the manufacturer. It’s a very simple procedure, and there may be minor updates that the car hasn’t had. The manufacturer may have tweaked the transmission-shifting algorithm or some other parameters that are not crucial but may bring slight improvements to drivability, mileage or emissions. Since auto manufacturers are coming out with automobile updates every day, there may be a reprogram available for your vehicle. Stop by Pete’s Garage or call us to schedule an appointment!
Why is my airbag light on? Many drivers don’t know the reasons behind it and the ignorance can mean the difference between life and death, literally! A number of reasons could work behind an illuminated airbag light. The fact that you should worry most is it means that the bag won’t deploy at the time of an accident.
